Choosing after-school care in Bedford: 8 questions to ask

What to ask before you sign up for after-school care in Bedford, NS: pickup, homework, ratios, late policy and more.

Most Bedford families start looking for after-school care in August or right after the first PA Day. The good programs fill early, so it helps to know what to ask before you visit. These are the eight questions we hear from parents most, and the answers worth listening for.

1. How does my child get from school to the program?

Pickup is the part that makes or breaks a week. Ask who walks or drives the children, how many staff go, and what happens if a class is let out late. A program that picks up from your child’s own school saves you the 2:30 scramble entirely.

2. When does homework happen, and who helps?

Homework done at the program means evenings at home stay free. Ask whether there is a set homework time, whether a teacher checks it, and what happens on days with no homework. Children do better when homework comes first and play comes after.

3. What does the rest of the afternoon look like?

Ask for a sample timetable. A good afternoon mixes quiet work with movement and something hands-on: crafts, a small STEM project, games that build focus. Screens should be the exception, not the filler.

4. What is the staff-to-child ratio?

Smaller groups mean someone notices when your child is tired, stuck or upset. Ask the ratio on a normal day and on a busy one, and whether the same staff are there every day. Children settle faster with familiar faces.

5. Is French or extra learning built in?

For French Immersion families, a little French practice in the afternoon goes a long way. Ask whether the program offers French support, reading time or thinking-skills games as part of the day rather than as a paid add-on.

6. What are the real costs?

Compare the per-day price, not just the monthly fee. Ask what is included, whether there is a discount for more days a week, how PA Days and holidays are handled, and what the late fee is. A clear price sheet is a good sign.

7. What happens on PA Days and school breaks?

PA Days come around more often than most parents expect. Ask whether the program runs full-day camps on those days, and whether current families get first pick of spots.

8. Can we visit while the program is running?

The best test is to see a normal afternoon. Watch how staff talk to the children, how the room feels, and whether your child wants to stay. If a program is happy to have you drop by, that tells you a lot.
